As part of its ongoing Bled Strategic Forum Conversations series, the Bled Strategic Forum hosted a compelling discussion on the European Union’s role in a world marked by deep geopolitical transformation. The event, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, featured João Vale de Almeida, one of Europe’s most experienced diplomats.

In a conversation rooted in decades of diplomatic service, Vale de Almeida offered reflections on the EU’s evolution amid mounting global challenges. Having served as EU Ambassador to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations, and as a close advisor to European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, he brought a rich perspective to questions of unity, resilience, and strategic direction.
Drawing on his recent book The Divorce of Nations, he highlighted what he described as “two divorces: one among nations, and one within the nations.” Despite these widening divides, he voiced optimism: “I remain hopeful that we can overcome these divorces and protect the marriage of nations.”
Vale de Almeida also addressed how crisis has historically shaped the EU’s progress: “We only make a qualitative jump when forced to do so,” he remarked, noting that recent global tensions have created the conditions for greater unity within the Union.

This event is part of the Bled Strategic Forum’s broader role as a platform for inclusive and forward-looking dialogue. Through Bled Strategic Forum Conversations, the Forum provides space for diverse voices from politics, diplomacy, academia, and civil society to address the key issues shaping our global future.
We extend our sincere thanks to Ambassador João Vale de Almeida for his participation, and to the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, for their valued partnership.
